Description:
Chopsticks - the honorable hashi - are one of the many jokes the Japanese play on foreigners. The truth is that long, long ago, they used to use knives and forks, but decided to play a joke on one of the first western guests to see how he'd react. They told him that it is Japanese custom to eat with sticks, and brought them to him with such reverence that he knew he had to respect their customs and try eating with the hashi. The guest was incredibly confused, and his reaction so amusing that the Japanese decided to continue to use chopsticks for the simple reason that people who can't use them look really funny when trying to eat. Anyone who masters the use of hashi is considered to be a god among men. |
